Hon. Frank Aduse Poku, District Chief Executive, Asunafo South District Assembly
In 2022, upon encouragement of the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council and supported by IRC Ghana, Asunafo South District Assembly embarked on the development of a District WASH Master Plan.
The plan was co-developed with the development partners, including World Vision, Safe Water Network, Aquaya Institute, Project Maji, Saha Global, and Community Water and Sanitation Agency as well as with local NGOs, private sector, women and youth associations, faith-based organisations and the entire populace of the Asunafo South District, and chiefs.
The plan – also referred to as Asunafo South Nsupa ne Ahoteɛ Nkosoɔ (ASNAN Initiative) - provides the roadmap for all activities by all actors towards improved WASH services in the district for the next eight years. It builds on the guidelines of the National Development Planning Commission of Ghana and is framed within the targets of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6.
The plan provides coordination and ensures alignment of efforts to establishing a district where every person in each household, health and educational institution has access to safe and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services by 2030. It seeks to increase the proportion of population with access to safe and sustainable water from 70% to 100% by 2030 and improve access to safely managed sanitation from 20% to 97% by 2030. ‘
There is a conscious effort to penetrate hard-to-reach communities to ensure that even without the use of drilling machines, available surface water sources are treated and manually tapped for safe consumption.
