Abstract | This book describes infectious diseases in tropical and developing countries and the measures that can be used effectively against them. The environmental interventions that receive most attention are safe water supply and improved excreta disposal. This second edition incorporates the lessons learned from the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (1981-1990) relating to policy and strategy issues such as cost recovery, the role of the private sector and sanitation marketing. There are two chapters on appropriate technologies for rural and urban water supply and treatment. More attention is given to excreta disposal systems such as latrines, septic tanks and small-bore sewers. The section on wastewater treatment is restricted to waste stabilization ponds, aerated lagoons, and oxidation ditches. The 2nd edition has a new chapter on surface water drainage. An overview of refuse collection and disposal methods is followed by updated chapters on composting and the health aspects of waste re-use. The final part of the book is on engineering methods for the control of vector-borne diseases such as onchocerciasis (river blindness), malaria, and especially schistosomiasis (bilharzia). The appendixes contain a glossary and a checklist of water-related and excreta-related diseases. |
