Abstract

The book summarizes the findings of the first phase (1981-1986) of UNDP/World Bank Project INT/81/026 - Laboratory and Field Testing and Technological Development of Community Water Supply Handpumps. Guidelines are given for the selection of water supply systems in general, as well as for the planning of handpump projects, with the emphasis on community-based maintenance. Handpump technology, in particular performance and design, is also discussed. Of 70 models evaluated, 42 types are included in a pump selection guide. This is followed by a number of examples which demonstrate how the pump selection tables can be used. A handpump compendium is provided as a reference for more detailed analysis of the 42 shortlisted pumps. Annexes contain brief details of 17 additional pumps not tested in the project and a comparison of costs and time savings for commmunity water supply options.
