Abstract

The IYSH project is based on community participation. Before the start the Maligakanda community's priorities and felt needs were registered. Community leaders were chosen, and trained by the project. A videotape on sanitary habits was used to convince first the community leaders and then the entire community of the importance of the project. Reduction of water wastage is found to have the highest priority and a videofilm was made by the community on this problem. The film, "Water is gold", is included in the main video. Participation not paternalism is the last part of this video. It shows the upgrading of a 30 year old well in the slum of Wanathamulla. Through involvement of the community from the beginning the success of the project was safeguarded.
