Abstract

In order to bridge the gap between city bred planners and the needs, priorities, and benefits of safe water and sanitation systems as perceived by the beneficiaries it is important to understand the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the rural population with regard to the subject. A comprehensive study was carried out among the rural population in 8 states in India. In the qualitative part 3 target groups were covered: beneficiaries, influencers, and implementors. Influencers are defined as those residents of a village who hold positions of influence by virtue of being respected for their age, social position, or occupational authority, and could therefore be expected to be active agents of change in attitudes and practices of the villagers. 176 influencers were interviewed about their water collection and storage practices; classification of water sources; understanding of safe water, handpumps, health and cleanliness, personal cleanliness, waste water disposal, garbage disposal, cow dung disposal, defecation practices, and use of household and community latrines.
