Abstract | This manual shows how to make a simple, cheap pump suitable for irrigating small plots such as gardens up to 0.50 hectares. The design of the rope-and-washer pump (sometimes also referred to as a chain pump) described in the manual evolved from experience in Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Although the manual primarily deals with a model intended for use with unlined open wells, a modified version suitable for deeper (up to 4 metres) vertical lined wells is also described. Guidance is given on suitable tools and construction materials, as well as on the actual construction, assembly, operation and maintenance. The total cost of the basic materials was about 70 Zimbabwean dollars in 1989, or US$ 30 according to the 1988 exchange rate. |
