Abstract

The main theme of this book is planning and developing sustainable piped water systems in rural and peri-urban areas. Current experiences are reviewed and translated into project guidelines for: technology selection; organization; planning; design and construction; and management. The book emphasizes the "partnership approach" in which responsibility for projects is shared between agency and user communities. During each phase of the project cycle, attention is given to community participation, especially of women, as well as the integration of hygiene education and sanitation in water supply projects. Finally, ways of improving programmes by demonstration, exchanging information, and by building in flexibility are proposed. An appendix looks at broader policy issues such as legislation and (donor) financing which influence water supply development.
