Abstract

The widespread deterioration of the environment is no longer a concern of a handful of scientists and environmentalists, but a major problem for all the earth's inhabitants. The role of women in environmental protection and preservation is becoming increasingly recognized. Third world women are often the most affected by environmental degradation, as they must travel daily farther and farther to obtain water and firewood for their families. This book, part of the Women and World Development Series, explains key issues in environmental degradation and examines the varied roles of women in relation to these issues in their capacities as consumers, educators, managers, and many more. It is shown how women can be a major influence in environmental change. Case studies from Sierra Leone, Kenya, Bengal, Nepal and Costa Rica are included.
