Abstract | The Water and Sanitation for Health Project (WASH) has done a field study in the Caribbean Region for Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti and Jamaica assessing the availability of water and sanitation systems and the progress toward improvement. The present cholera epidemic has emphasized the public health risk from inadequate sanitation and poor quality drinking water. The rural water coverage has increased only by 1% since 1985, while the sanitation coverage has decreased by 8%. The WASH targets are to provide full coverage by 2020. Each country is discussed separately, with present conditions, future goals, institutional support and funding committments and shortfalls for each. Gains in the urban districts have been high, both in water and sanitation system provision, while those in the rural districts have declined. Grenada is considered for this study as completely urban. |
