Abstract

The paper summarizes the status of water conservation in Thailand. The first section gives a brief overview of the characteristics of major river basins in Thailand and some highlights on the gloomy forecast for future water availability, as has been suggested by several water budgeting studies. The article also describes current water conservation programmes in Thailand. The final section discusses the challenges of water resources management, that need to cater both for development and conservation needs. It is suggested that the water crisis may occur much sooner than the general population realizes. It is argued that a network of agencies should be established to work together towards averting such a crisis. This should be a multi-disciplinary network that would contribute towards clarifying the overall regional situation.
