Abstract

The report explores the connection between water production and the systems that have sprung up to distribute water to peri-urban consumers. Peri-urban in this context refers to the nonformal zone outside of government influence. The report attempts to provide insights that will help water system planners better understand the role that the nonformal sector can play in water provision. The report examines the advantages and disadvantages of peri-urban water development and also includes two case studies looking into the situation in Kathmandu, Nepal and Khartoum, Sudan. At the end of the report recommendations are provided for donor and NGO organizations which fall into four categories: political considerations, engineering design elements, program design elements, and environmental and health issues.
