Abstract | This technical note, the fourth in the WASH series, is on the topic of household disinfection of water, with particular reference to situations where cholera is epidemic or endemic. Written for non-technical personnel, it states that a succesful household disinfection programme requires good government planning and support, informed decision-making on the method of disinfection to be promoted, ancillary programmes to promote correct hygiene behaviour, and assuring safe water storage. The note gives details on the two most approriate methods of disifection: a. direct chlorination with the use of liquid bleach or b. chlorination with the use of a stock solution prepared in the home. Tables showing the exact measurements in each case are included. It also gives criteria developed by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for a safe household water container. Finally the note explains why certain disinfection or filtering systems are ineffective or inappropriate in the the presence of cholera. |
