Abstract

In 1990 and 1991, IRC undertook a number of field assignments on information management in institutions in the water and sanitation sector in Africa and Asia. These assignments aimed to identify and analyze problems in delivering information effectively to users in the sector and, where possible suggest solutions. This document endeavours to bring together the main lessons learned from these assignments in an attempt to help managers in sector institutions in other countries to identify and solve common information management problems. Two of the assignments, to Uganda and Ethiopia, resulted in new proposals for organizing information provision in government institutions. The other assignments were concerned with assessing or evaluating information networking activities of existing projects. These included national networks in Tanzania, the Philippines and Indonesia, and a regional network, ENSICNET, based in Bangkok, Thailand, with focal points in China, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
