Abstract

This short leaflet lays out the basic issues regarding the reuse of wastewater in developing countries. It also includes a copy of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) comprehensive guidelines for wastewater reuse. It is essentially a summary of the relevant material in the EPA's Guidelines for water reuse, which have been updated and revised by the WASH project, to bring the information on technologies up to date and to introduce information about developing country applications. Planning, technical, financial, institutional, and legal issues are covered in the Fact Sheet. A four page table, included as an insert, covers all types of reuse, from unrestricted urban reuses such as landscape irrigation and toilet flushing, to indirect potable reuse through groundwater recharge. In each instance, treatment processes, water quality standards, monitoring frequency, and setback distances are covered.
