Abstract

Cost benefit analysis is a method frequently applied to investigate whether development projects and programmes are attractive from a financial and economic point of view. The aim of this document is to provide non-economists involved in development projects with some basic tools to gain insight into the extent to which and how cost benefit analysis studies may assist in the appraisal of development activities. The document uses a community irrigation pilot project based in Kerala, India, as an example in the section on financial analysis.
