Abstract

In a speech that was prepared for the 20th WEDC Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka, C.H. de Tissera, Chairman of the local organizing committee, stated that the challenge for the future is not so much to answer technological questions but rather organizational ones. The theme of the conference was water resource management and allocation of this (limited) resource to meet the needs of competing sectors. The conference was attended by 240 delegates from Asian, African and European countries, and was divided into plenary sessions and discussion groups. The plenary sessions included papers on affordable sanitation and the importance of social acceptability; water and economic development; hygiene education; privatization of sewerage services. The discussion groups addressed a number of subjects covering a range of socio-economic issues such as women and their role in a male-dominated society, gender appreciation, and community participation. Other themes included pollution and the environment; sustainable rural water supply; solid waste management; appropriate technology. Each chapter dealing with a specific topic concludes with a summary of the discussions.
