Abstract | Volume I : final report ; Volume II : background paper and presentations on project experences. Includes the following papers: Re-organization and institutional developments in the water and sanitation sector; Overview of water and sanitation and activities; Communication between national, sub-national levels and donor-supported projects; Financial systems for water supply; Community management and financial issues; Community hygiene, awareness and behavioural change; Water resources management and environment; Sustainable technology, operation and maintenance; and Policy and institutional issues for water supply and sanitation; Water Aid and the Gwembe South Development Project; Irish Aid : rural water supply project; R water for health project (RWFH); Rural water supply project - Central Province; Community management in the Japanese-aided project for the rural water supply development; and Strategies, approaches and experiences in rural water supply and sanitation. This document was based on work accomplished by the project, "The Piped Water Supplies for Small Communities" (PSSC), carried out in low income urban areas in Zambia. Coming at a time when the Zambian Government is seeking to redress the poor performance of its water and sanitation sector by formulating a national water policy to restructure this sector, this workshop's objective was to share knowledge gained from the PSSC project and similar projects and lead to the identificati strategies and plans of action for the development of approaches for sustainable water supplies and for improved management capabilities at all levels in community-based projects in Zambia. Action plans for four activities resulted from the namely, (1) strategies for the improvement of community management of rural water supply and sanitation programmes, (2) formulation of a National Water Supply Policy, (3) strategies for improvement of communication in the rural water supply sanitation sector, and (4) development of training programmes at all levels in technical skills. Volume I of the report is a summary document which includes summaries of the opening address, background information on the PSSC project, the te background papers presented, and the presentations of project experiences dating from 1994. Appendices include a list of participants and workshop evaluation results. Volume II of the report supplements the first volume with copies of each p during the workshop. |
