Abstract

The report is designed to help water managers by sorting out all problems associated with the assessment of water quality in the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Region, to economically and efficiently develop and allocate water resources in the region to various uses, such as for drinking, household and municipal purposes, agriculture and irrigation, industry and recreation. The document examines the current status and practices related to water quality in the region. It also focuses on water quality issues and control, from which it considers the question of water quality monitoring, the reality of this activity in the region, and the requirements for a monitoring programme. The report then provides an overview of water remediation and water pollution prevention. Recommendations given in this report are aimed at stimulating the adoption of proper measures to ensure better water quality norms according to the requirements for the sustainable socio-economic development of the countries of the ESCWA region.
