| Abstract | The Mexico workshop addressed questions identified during the first workshop in El Salvador, in 1993. These referred to the production of improved dry-box latrines, cost and marketing. Test results of two new prototypes based on the best features of LASF (Letrina Abonera Seca Familiar) and double chamber solar-heated composting latrines (SIRDO) were reviewed, using case studies from around the world. Modifications included the use of one- chamber rather than two-chambers, evapo-transpiration, and urine- separation. Also examined were decomposition and desiccation processes of human waste, and control of harmful micro-organisms. Individual papers presented at the workshop refer to different projects using the new experimental latrines. Each paper includes a brief summary of major observations. |
