Abstract

Sanitation is one of the most basic infrastructure services and one which many poor communities are unable to afford, since, in most countries, demand for sewerage exceeds resources to provide it. However, conventional schemes for house and communal sewerage can be modified, or new schemes planned, so that costs of construction and maintenance can be lowered. This handbook describes these schemes and suggests objective methods to prioritize communities' needs for sewerage. It surveys the planning, selection, design, construction, management and maintenance of community schemes, and provides technical and financial suggestions for cost-effective practice and procedures. Non-conventional options are discussed as well as the conventional approach to sewerage design and implementation. Appendices provide a glossary of terms and give design details for the construction of interceptor tanks.
