Abstract

This publication represents a ready reference to statements and recommendations which have emerged from major international meetings, addressing water issues and water resources development. The document includes the papers resulting from two United Nations Conferences held in 1977 and 1992 respectively, a Global Consultation held in 1990, a Symposium held in the Netherlands in 1991, two International Conferences held in 1992, a Round Table on Water and Health held in 1994, and a Ministerial Conference held in the Netherlands in 1994. These meetings looked at water issues from different perspectives, e.g. water supply; public health and sanitation; irrigated agriculture; water and the environment; the management of water and sanitation utilities; comprehensive water resources management; and water sector capacity building. The information published in this volume reflects the best experience and knowledge available today. This publication presents state-of-the-art information for the preparation and implementation of water policies, strategies, programmes and projects and will facilitate the monitoring and evaluation of trends at the national, regional and global levels.
