Abstract

Recognizing the link between a clean environment, good health and a low mortality rate, the general objective of the conference was to deliberate, analyze and evolve a practicable strategy for the promotion and sustenance of environmental hygiene and to disseminate experiences and lessons learned from past activities in the water and environmental sanitation sector with special focus on community participation and management. This document includes the thirteen papers presented under the sub-themes: personal hygiene habits and associated factors; environmental sanitation and the role of communities with special focus on low-cost sanitation programmes; pollution and environmental hazards; and media and its role in social change of environmental hygiene and promotional initiatives. The resulting discussion groups stressed five important issues; namely, (1) health aspects of environment; (2) community participation for promotion of environmental health; (3) media to promote environmental health; (4) training for health education in environmental health; and (5) inter-sectoral coordination to promote environmental health. The participants agreed that once the provision of a safe water supply and excreta disposal facility has been addressed, other environmental problems such as adequate drainage, the disposal of garbage, industrial pollution, uncontrolled growth of population, and unhygienic habits should become priority issues in both rural and urban areas.
