Abstract

The health impact of using biogas digesters in China is discussed. Main improvements noted in comparison to villages not using biogas included a reduction in the occurrence of flies, maggots and pupae, a reduction in the levels of soil and water source pollution, a reduction in morbidity and infection caused by faecal-disposal diseases, and an improvement in indoor air quality. A number of technical measures concerning biogas technology, including advice on pretreatment, key measures regarding fermentation technology, and the treatment of digester sludge were mentioned as being among the reasons to explain the improved health impact in locations using biogas digesters.
