Abstract

This article describes two participatory visual exercises which were used to start discussion about hygiene and sanitation. The first exercise involves mapping; an example of its use in the Siaya Health Education, Water and Sanitation (SHEWAS) project in a village in Kenya is given. The second exercise described is "three pile sorting" in which participants are given sets of drawings on sanitation and hygiene. The group is asked to discuss them, and agree to sort them into three piles: good, bad and 'in-between'. A description of how this method was used in two villages in Tanzania (one Christian and one Muslim village) is given.
