Abstract | The paper describes some small-scale, community based waste management projects, and its emphasis is to access their potential to change the simple, and increasingly ineffectual, conventional organization of residential solid waste services in Asian cities. The paper outlines some salient features of the waste economy in Asian cities which have led to such voluntary initiatives to change local waste management. Some suggestions are also made on further actions which are needed to address the sources of waste problems. Two case studies are included, one describing street pickers in Calcutta slums, the other a programme to support the renovation and sale of second-hand shoes in Delhi. |
