Abstract

This article deals with visual literacy in rural communities. It is based on a field study carried out in 1987 in the Indian-Danish Orissa Drinking Water Project in India. The author describes how she used traditional (folk) art forms to develop audiovisual aids with the help of village women. These audiovisual aids, mostly posters, depicted hygienic practices relating to the use handpump tubewells and latrines. Initially, the field study methodology and results met with much resistance from the westernized socio-economists of the project office.
