Abstract

Some factors contributing to the low standard of living of rural women in Africa are discussed and the ineffectiveness of government programmes to improve their plight is highlighted. A survey conducted among 200 women from four states reveals that rural women, who are predominantly illiterate, are ignorant of modern methods of improving agricultural production and of other ways of self-development. The dissemination of vital information on community self-improvement is seen as an effective means of rural development. Radio (60%), followed by neighbours/friends (25%) and community leaders/government officials (15%) were considered to be the main sources of useful information by the respondents of the survey. Radio jingles are recommended as a means of disseminating development information to rural people.
