Abstract | The symposium focused on critical urban water and sanitation issues in the twenty-first century. By 2025 the urban population in emerging economic regions of the world will grow by 2.5 billion - nearly the current population of India and China combined - and place extreme demands on water supply and sanitation systems. The papers and presentations at the meeting examined the problems and sought constructive strategies to secure a stable, yet dynamic and creative urban situation. Delegates considered the problems associated with increased demands on water supply and sanitation systems and sought constructive strategies to provide safe, sufficient water resources to urban dwellers. They focused on avoiding the collapse of cities and livelihoods due to water supply and sanitation problems, or due to unemployment when severe water pollution forces industries to close down. The focus being on the ability to tackle challenges within the city, while at the same time being able to cope with unavoidable floods and water pollution as a result of activities upstream. |
