Abstract

The performance of two ceramic filter candles and one silver-impregnated filter candle with a layer of activated carbon, randomly selected from those available in the Indian commercial market, were evaluated employing the Escherichia coli and the poliovirus challenge tests and a long-duration filtration test mimicking the home treatment of water. None of the candles appeared reliable as microbiological water purifiers. The authors recommended additional disinfection or boiling must be practised during suspected outbreaks of waterborne viral diseases.
