Abstract | The Euroguard domestic water filter-cum-purifier, manufactured by Eureka Forbes Ltd, Bombay, India, is designed to produce 1 litre of drinking water per minute. It consists of a propylene candle prefilter (gross impurity removal), an activated carbon filter (organic compound removal), and an ultraviolet light irradiation compartment (disinfection). The unit was evaluated for the treatment of drinking water seeded with laboratory strains of viruses, bacteria and phages, sewage-contaminated river water, and secondary treated wastewater containing naturally occurring organisms. All contaminants were reduced by more than 99.99 per cent in all waters tested, well within the microbiological limits of international specifications for drinking water. However in terms of installation, operation, maintenance and costs, the Euroguard may not be suited for a substantial part of the target market. |
