Abstract | Failure to protect a water source from the impacts of polluters and depletors such as agriculture, industry and upstream communities, can place pressure on a local system, causing a rapid deterioration in the quality, quantity and reliability of the drinking water supply. It is suggested that effective management and protection of water resources is vital, particularly for small and medium-sized communities in developing countries who have few technical, economic, or legal means to protect themselves against a deterioration of their water sources. The article mentions some examples of water source problems and attempts to provide a framework for assessing the nature and causes of the deterioration of water sources. |
