Abstract | SIWIL is a pipe lifting device that is called after its developers SIbanda Zanamwe and WILlem Harderwijk. It was designed as a more practical and less expensive solution to the permanent sheerlegs used on the majority of boreholes in Zimbabwe. The article describes the techncial features and operation of this device which also works on all existing Bush pump modifications. It has been introduced into all the provinces in the country. An experimental community-based maintenance system that is being tested has proven that SIWIL is not just another tool, but a tool that helps to maximize communities' self-determination. Through village level training workshops, 150 pump users have become Bush pump mechanics, of which 60 per cent are women. |
