Abstract

The International Course for Primary Health Care Managers at District Level in Developing Countries of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita in Rome, initiated a pilot project to set up 30 district health libraries in Tanzania and Uganda. In 1992 each library received a set of books which had been selected by 30 district medical officers in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. The total cost of the basic library sets was US$ 19,500. Together with the delivery of the books, two-day workshops on the management of district libraries were held in the recipient countries. The article concludes with guidelines for establishing, promoting and upgrading district libraries, and suggestions for follow-up and evaluation.
