Abstract

This article examines participatory evaluations which teams of three to eight people carried out in five focus communities in Sindhupalchok and Kavrepalanchok in Nepal. The teams conducted the evaluations over a two-day period. They spent the first day mapping the village and conducted participatory rural appraisals (PRA) on the second. The following PRA tools were used: social maps, chapati diagram, wealth ranking matrix, comparative analysis matrix, resource location, and timelines. The teams also developed a set of indicators of "increased community capacity". They concluded that: local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) did not have the capacity to carry out PRAs; PRA tools should be used flexibly; more attention should be given to measuring community capacity.
