Abstract

Sanitation projects and programs provide good opportunities for poor women to work as masons because of their acceptability to work in homes and compounds in the absence of male relatives, their need for and high commitment to local paid work and their capability to promote sanitation and hygiene to fellow women and educate them on technical aspects such as operation and their earlier experience with plastering. A womens training program and training institute (now several) helped poor Kerala women to set up small enterprises for toilet promotion and construction. The approach has been scaled up to the state and trainers and trainees also come from neighboring states and countries.
