Abstract

In the Dakiri irrigation system of Burkina Faso, the effects of allocation of plots on productivity, labor contributions, and intra-household distribution of income derived from agricultural activities are compared when men are the sole owners of plots, and when both men and women within the same household own irrigated plots. In households where both men and women own plots, land and labor productivity are higher, the income received by women increases sharply, and the proportion of labour contributed by women to the plots owned by men remains unchanged.
