Abstract

This document provides guidelines on rural sanitation technologies for implementing agencies and users in the Centrally Sponsored Rural Sanitation Programme (CRSP) in India. It includes a state-of-the-art of existing technologies and sections on precautions against pollution, operation and maintenance, human resources needs, training, research and development. The following options are compared: open defecation, single pit latrines, lined pit latrines, bucket latrines, composting latrines (continuous and batch), ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines (single and double pit), single pit water seal latrines (unlined and lined), single pit offset pit water seal latrines, two-pit water seal latrines, and septic tanks. There are also appendices with technical drawings of a number of options with corresponding quantity estimates. The report also gives twelve recommendations to the Indian government concerning the programme.
