Abstract

In this paper, originally presented at the International Toilet Symposium, in Toyama, Japan, in October 1996, it is argued that dry sanitation technologies provide some of the solutions to the problems which waterborne sewage systems have failed to solve in developing countries. Promising pilot activities are briefly described. Ecological, dry sanitation options as described in this document, are seen as something which may contribute both to the environmental as well as to the financial sustainability of water and sanitation projects.
