Abstract

Children are the most vulnerable group affected by inappropriate water provision and sanitary conditions. An estimated 3 million children under five die every year as a consequence of diseases related to inadequate water and sanitation, such as diarrhoea, typhoid and cholera. Since children are silent victims and have no forum to express their points of view, the 1996 World Water Day, held in Beijing, decided to include a special encounter where children from different areas of the world could express their vision about water and cities. The Children's Encounter in Beijing was the culmination of meetings held in various capitals of the world; namely, Quito (Ecuador), Nairobi (Kenya), Stockholm (Sweden), and Jakarta (Indonesia). Messages from children of those cities documented on video were presented at the Beijing Encounter during the World Water Day. This booklet summarizes the activities developed under the programme in Quito, Ecuador, and reproduces the best work as the children's contribution to the World Water Day. The children developed the following subjects: autobiographies, including an experience related to water and sanitation; drawings about water, sanitation and the environment; essays about what children would do about water and sanitation if becoming a city's mayor; poems and short stories about water and the cities of the future; news releases about the relationship of water and sanitation to the environment and development; and compositions about the relevance of water and sanitation to public health.
