Abstract

This book is a collection of papers presented at the 2nd International River Quality Symposium in Gdansk, Poland, in 1994. The papers give case studies of the quality of rivers in different parts of the world, focusing particularly on the polluted Vistula River in Poland and the revived Willamette River in Oregon, USA which was the subject of a major cleaning operation in the 1970s. The case studies are supported by chapters dealing with pollution caused by specific industries or pollutants. These include mine water, agricultural drainage, heavy metals and pesticides. The different methods of assessing and modeling river water quality are described as well as the effect of pollutants on biota. The final chapters describe the different practical approaches to managing water quality in Poland, the USA and the UK.
