Abstract | South Africa's Health Education and Awareness Task Team (HEATT) was created to develop a strategy for a National Health and Hygiene Education Awareness programme that will, inter alia, optimize the health benefits of infrastructure investments. HEATT's first task was to conduct a review of existing health and hygiene education and promotion activities in South Africa. This report is the result of that review. The report covers the following sectors: education and training, infrastructure provision and health. The report also deals with educational approaches and the role of mass media in relation to water and sanitation-related health education and promotion. The report covers the situation as it existed up to the end of 1996. A number of conclusions are presented on health and hygiene promotion in the South African context, most of which are of direct relevance to future policy development. |
