Abstract

This manual is the third in a series on rural water supply technology for Africa. It provides instructions on the use of Eijkelkamp drilling sets: a 4 inch set for well siting and surveying; a 6 inch set for hand pumps with a 50 mm cylinder; and an 8 inch set for hand pumps with 63 to 75 mm cylinders. The manual begins with a comparison of dug wells, hand drilled wells, and machine drilled wells. This is followed by a chapter on well design. The main part of the manual deals with the drilling equipment and the drilling process itself. It provides instructions on the use of the above mentioned drilling sets, on finishing the borehole and on hand pump platform construction. The 6 inch drilling set can also be used for drilling latrine pits. The manual concludes with short sections on maintenance (drilling equipment and wells) and construction costs.
