Abstract

After reviewing people's participation and gender in developing theatre in general, the role of development theatre is described in five water and sanitation programmes in India. The author concludes that collective action and behavioural change require a different type of theatre than now practised in some of these programmes. A gender perspective, present in some cases, is needed consistently to avoid a situation whereby performing arts confirm and reinforce existing gender inequalities. Empirical research is recommended for further insights into gender aspects of contents, access, and impacts.
