Abstract

This book aims to encourage more critical reflection on, and above all improve practice regarding the integration of, an understanding of gender issues into participatory development. It challenges the myth of community cohesion that continues to permeate much supposedly participatory work. The contributions discuss how participatory approaches have, and have not, dealt with gender, and how gender studies deal, and do not deal, with participatory development. The book comprises theoretical reflections, practical experiences and institutional examples from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, covering a wide range of sectors.
