Abstract

This field note describes a successful community-managed multi-village piped water supply scheme in the Shirol taluka of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra, India. The joint water management body (mandal) of four villages has operated and maintained the scheme for 19 years, during which time it created a considerable revenue surplus. The note explains why the scheme has not been replicated elsewhere, current problems and lessons learned.
