Abstract

This book is the outcome of a workshop held in Cuernavaca, Mexico from 17-21 October 1999. It introduces ecological sanitation as an alternative ecosystem-based or "closed loop" approach that prevents pollution by recycling nutrients and organic matter. A section on ecological toilet design presents experiences with urine-diverting toilets in Mexico and composting latrines (ArboLoo, Fossa Alterna) in Zimbabwe. This is followed by discussions on: the health risks of ecological sanitation; recycling of human excreta especially for use as fertilizer; the role of urban agriculture in food security; and the promotion of ecological sanitation at the global, regional and national (Mexican) level.
