Abstract

This report is based on a colloquium sponsored by the American Academy of Microbiology held March 3-4, 2000, in Amelia Island, Florida. It evaluates the current status of water quality, gives recent examples of water-related disease outbreaks in the USA, discusses new and emerging issues, and examines shortcomings of current practices. The report outlines gene probes, genotyping, antibody, and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) techniques that stand to replace outdated testing methods. It makes specific recommendations for risk assessment, technology use, data collection, research collaboration, and evaluation and development of best practices.
