Abstract

Meant as an instrument for stakeholders in urban waste management to assess the possibilities of an integrated sustainable waste management (ISWM) approach. Also to be used as a basis for training staff in municipal departments as well as private operators. Comprises experiences from the Urban Waste Expertise Programme (UWEP) research and pilot projects over the period 1995-2001. It deals with the ISWM issues and with micro and small enterprises and communities as important stakeholders in waste management, organic waste as the major fraction in the South and financial aspects as an important but often neglected knowledge area.
