Abstract

Water will be the issue of the twenty-first century. This thirteen part international documentary series on fresh water started being broadcast world wide in spring 2000. The series is a global inventory of the actual fresh water situation and was filmed at more than 100 locations around the world. The series examines the many issues and implications of clean drinking water, with stunning images and interviews with a wide range of global figures including Mikhail Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama, author Isabel Allende, former US President Jimmy Carter and U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
The series is a prestigious project which answers to the growing international demand to increase people's awareness of water. In the media there is a growing interest for water related issues. Internationally, governments and non governmental organisations (NGO's) call for a global awareness programme.
In thirteen episodes of twenty-five minutes, political, strategical, economical, cultural, social, health and food & agricultural aspects of fresh water are shown in an attractive and exciting way. How do dams and lakes influence our health? What does a fishing trawler do in the middle of the desert? And how can people drink fog? It is all told in this series that is made in close co-operation with the United Nations.
In order to get ànd hold the viewers' attention, the series is, by no means, pessimistic. It captures the imagination of viewers all over the world by showing water in all its splendour and uniqueness.
The series was produced by Swynk, one of the top producers of television documentaries in the Netherlands and is distributed world wide in an international version which is suitable for adaptation in any language.
