Abstract

The introduction of a handpump and a light-weight wheelbarrow (pousse-pousse canari) to transport water jars, reduced water collection time from six to one hours for the women of Koukoulougou in Burkina Faso. This gained time enabled one woman to quadruple her income by brewing millet beer. However, her increased income did have the adverse effect that her husband was less willing to contribute his customary share to the household budget.
